It depends on the format of the photo, if it is, say, a JPEG, then no, you will not be able to view the original photo, but if your friend sends you the origional Photoshop document [*PSD], then yes, you will be able to, providing that your frient has duplicated the layers before applying effects to them, unless it is an adjustment layer, which you can show or hide by clicking the eye at the layer.
